From the desk of Sheriff Scott Bradley
On December 16th, 2015, the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office received information, from a citizen of Van Buren County of a phone scam. It was reported that a group of foreign speaking persons was contacting individuals on thier phones, claiming to be with the Federal Grant Department. A subject, saying their name was Michelle, stated the individual had been selected to receive a $7000.00 to $9000.00 grant from the Us Grants and Treasury Department for paying their taxes on time. The person told the individual they knew my home address and email. They told the individual they needed to verify it. The individual said the caller gave me a access code and needed to call Alex Smith at 206-452-3388. The caller told the individual they had a year to claim the grant and needed a deposit fee of $262.00 sent to them via Walmart money gram.
The original number the scam called from is 202-885-9875.
Criminals and terrorist use many different phone number and email addresses from areas all across the United States and World in order to Scam money from unsuspected victims.
As your Sheriff, I wanted to warn the Citizens of Van Buren County , Arkansas, and the United States of this Scam.
Never give out personal information to people you do not know and do not fall prey in sending money to these people. They could be terrorist or just ordinary people, trying to get you hard earned money.
